SA: Hello and welcome to Hwa-ting sports! I am Mr.S.

PM: And I’m Paul.

SA: And we are the hosts of Hwa-ting Sports podcast. We focus on sports played in South Korea, their history and other things of interest. You can find this podcast on Spotify and other spots, and show notes on our website, when we make one.

PM: We’re long-time residents who’ve lived here for decades and we’ve been to sooo many sporting events! That makes us your go-to source on all the sports in Korea you shake your training sword at!  With that, 1, 2, 3 Hwa-ting!

SA: Today is the big day, Mr. Paul.

PM: Yes, we’re on the road today! We’re coming to you live from the hockey arena in Mokdong.

Baseball notes:

Had to leave early due to the ice hockey tickets problem.

Yonsei has won 4 straight and their fans were animated, more animated and louder than Korea’s. The Yonsei section was 75% full when I got inside. Quite a few foreign fans in   attendance tooo. Both teams had cheerleaders but Yonsei had stretchy balloons.

Jamsil is looking a bit dated. Seats a bit small for my butt.

Korea got a 2-0 lead due to some timely hitting and sloppy walks. Didn’t really have time to see any particular plays but the Yonsei infield’s got some good players. Jeong Won Jin kept a tight lid on the Yonsei batters. Korea had chances to blow it open but blew a bases loaded opportunity. Despite his issues Yonsei kept in 강민구 until he gave up a home run.

While we were in the hockey game, Yonsei kept the lead and they won 3 nil, breaking the losing streak.

Soccer.

Large crowd outside so we thought at first it would be packed. But it’s a very large stadium so plenty of seats. Fewer Yonsei students today. VERY loud but not as loud as the ice arena. They had water jets tuned to the music.

During the opening ceremony, it sounded like the Yonsei announcer said “SIT DOWN” or “YOU’RE SHIT” or “GO SHIT”! Many foreign students in attendance. Some English speakers so we got interviews. Way more KU students than Yonsei students.

Missed opportunity for Yonsei at 7:30, shot just went wide due to deflection. Goal after corner kick at 8:31. Yonsei seemed to be winning the possession battle early. Refs not calling a lot of fouls. Yonsei much more aggressive with the ball than Korea U was. Around 35m Korea tied it on some sloppy defense near the goal but it was called back due to offsides. Korea blew another opportunity at 38m as well but deflect a Yonsei shot at 39 to stay in the game. Yonsei had a corner at 41 but failed to get a shot because a player over ran the ball and it went out.

Hockey notes

Took us 30 minutes to get inside. They clearly oversold the building.

Very chippy 1st period with early goal by Korea U.

Play was very chippy from Yonsei. They scored at some point while we were dealing with the tickets. Noticed a lot of high sticking by Yonsei.

This is hurting my ears it was so loud with dueling bands and cheerleading squads.

Korea had the momentum and the energy compared to Yonsei but Yonsei seemed to have the better puck handling.

There was a long delay after the first shot of the second period and the players cleared the ice. I think it was a maintenance issue.

Korea scored again on a power play at 15:19. They'd been on the attack for most of the period including an exciting scrum in front of the goal. This goal was a lucky tap in off the forward’s stick by the left goal post.

The energy of the crowd got to Korea and they kept getting penalties. But Yonsei hasn't capitalized on the opportunity.

Korea scored again when #97 got out of the penalty box and got the puck bounced to him. Garam the Yonsei goalie looks depressed. His teammates cheered him up.

3rd period Yonsei scored twice in one minute while I was dealing with my phone then Korea $70 scored in 20 second to take back the lead on a breakaway!

Third period a double penalty with 4:30 remaining.

Basketball game.

We watched the game on YBS while we waited for dinner at the Ethiopian restaurant.

There was one dunk by Yonsei and he tried to do a Curry flex. It was funny.

#24 on Korea a good 3pt shooter. Yonsei #5 also a good shot.

Lowlight - Korea Dae #9 tried a half court Curry shot, bounced it off the board then blew his assignment on defense for 2. thought he was cooking but he got cooked instead.

Yonsei #9 played very well in the 2nd half. Great defense and good free throw shooting.

The games ended 2-2. Not sure how the tiebreaker would be determined for next year's games.
