Opening Statement/joke

SA: My fingers are crossed and I got my lucky totems from the backwoods of Moullamine ready!

JT: Fun times and sphincter clenching are just around the corner! Today’s topic is gambling and we’re gonna tell you how to do it!

SA: But not how to do it well as you will soon find out.

JT: Yeah you were the guy who once got sooooo hooked on gambling in high school and so prideful on success you literally bet on every sport in the paper one sunday, and lost everything and owed $200.

SA:Yeah it took double or nothing on Monday Night Football to save my ass. Lesson learned.

JT: No you didn’t! Season 2 you tried to bet your mom’s farm on the over on Bronny James! *Joke sting*
SA: He was due!

JT: Fortunately, even if you’re a problem gambler, there are ways you can make bets in Korea that won’t cost you a leg. Let’s talk about them, after the break! Disclaimer: Please bet recklessly and make poor decisions. If you or a loved  one has a gambling problem please call 1-800-this-game-is-horseshit, again that is 1-800-this-game-is-horseshit *joke sting*

Betting in Korea

JT: Alright all you degenerates out there…..

SA: …and in here.

JT: Indeed, Mr. S.

SA: Look at you, clutching that slip of paper like it’s a golden ticket. Don't tell me you went to a local convenience store and found God in a Sports TOTO shop?

JT: Better than God, my friend—I found the weekly KBO League odds. I just walked past that glowing neon sign at the corner TOTO shop, picked up this slip, and realized I have absolutely no idea what I'm looking at. You may ask yourself: Is this a lottery or am I funding the National Sports Promotion Fund? well Technically both! That’s the beauty of Korea's state-run gambling monopoly. If you’re a local, you can’t step foot in 95% of the casinos here unless you drive three hours into the mountains to Kangwon Land. But baseball? The government says, "Go ahead, pick a team, but we're capping your fun at exactly 100,000 won."

SA: Wait,  a 100,000 won limit? That's barely enough to cover a decent Korean fried chicken feast if the Doosan Bears blow a lead. What if I want to go completely rogue and bet my life savings online?

JT: Then you have to look at the gloriously outdated Betman website. It’s the only legal online platform. It looks like it was designed in 2004, shuts down completely at 11:00 PM every night because even servers need their beauty sleep, and blocks you from making reckless mid-game live bets. Either that or fill out an obscene 100,000 won bet slips.

SA: Wait a gambling site with a bedtime? That's hilarious. But hey, it says here they offer "Toto" and "Proto". What’s the difference, or is it just a clever rhyme?

JT: "Toto" is the traditional pari-mutuel pool—you’re guessing the exact scores of a bunch of games, and you share the jackpot. "Proto" gives you fixed odds where you just pick the match winners. It’s simpler, but the government deliberately keeps the payouts low so nobody gets too rich off a bad bullpen streak.

SA: Well, they certainly like to keep things interesting. I see they even have a special game called "Baseball First Half/Final" where you have to predict the score at the end of the 5th inning.

JT: Yes Mr. S.! It's kind of different, but good if you have a pitching matchup you like & you know a certain KBO bullpen is going to blow it haha. So basically instead of just losing my shirt on a normal 9-inning game, I can officially lose my retirement fund because a pitcher melted down in the 5th Sign me up!

SA: Can you describe the betting ticket at the shops and what else can you bet on?

JT: I have only done proto, and the betting slip allows up to 10 game parlays, and you can only do one bet per game you choose. There are many sports you can bet on the most popular being baseball (the NPB, MLB, KBO and most big tournaments) and soccer (Korean leagues, European leagues world cup etc..), but I have only done baseball. Can you tell us what the slip looks like Mr S.?

SA: The slip has 10 game squares with four columns per square with each column having the numbers from  0 to 9.  You will get a 4 digit code that you can get from the odds sheet the clerk has already printed or will print for you to use on which wagers you like to make they can also be found online at the betman site if you want to save the earth as you probably going to be losing some cash dollar “paper” anyways *Joke Sting*. At the bottom of each game square you will see “” “” and “” , in 한결 from left to right, means win for the home team of for the what ever the bet is could be U for under etc…, is the tie option for bets and usually the higher odds long shot bets, and is the lose column or opposite of the what it says, so it would be the under loses when you see the U. On the far right of the ticket is what you can bet and you can only choose one amount. Which is either 100 won, 200 won, 300 won, 500 won, 1000 won, 2000 won, 3000, won, 5000 won, 10,000 won, 20,000 won, 30,000 won, 50,000 won, or 100,000 won. What do you like to bet on Mr, J?

JT: I usually do a 3 game parlay and hedge my bets, hedging bets is where you put 2 games on 3 tickets so therefore if you win two games you come out even. You lose a little bit of the 3 game parlay but cut out some of the risk. For me I always stick to baseball. When you look at the odd slip you will always see the home team on the left side of the slip and the away team on the right side. The first thing you will see is straight win and there will be nothing to the right of the 4 digit code. That is just the moneyline, The next bet you will see is a 1 next to the four digit code which means you think a team will win by at least 2 runs or you can choose MU and that means it will be a tie game or a team wins by one run higher odds. Next you will see a capital or big H that is the favorite gets a -2.5 handicap and the non favorite gets +2.5 remember the the number showing is for the home team. Then there is a big U for the over/under and when you choose this Seong means you want the under and PAY is the over. Then there is an S  which means even or odd sum of the final scores odd being seong and even being pay, Then you will see a little h U which is half game over under remember the under is always seung and then you will see just a little h which is half game money line where you can pick win tie or lose for half game score which is after five innings. With my 3 game parlays I tend to pick over/under and the win by at least two options, those are my usual favorites. That’s all I got as I only bet on baseball in the store and I am not sure if I can sign up for the website.

SA: Wait Mr. J, there's good news for us! I heard that Sportstoto Korea updated its policy. Foreign residents can finally sign up for accounts on Betman using their Alien Registration Cards and local phone numbers! We no longer have to beg our Korean friends to place a bet online cause we were too damn lazy to walk to the shop.

JT: Wow, true inclusivity. Now expats can also experience the unique heartbreak of Korean baseball.

JT: Oh, come on, KBO is pure entertainment! Where else do you get coordinated fan choreography for every single player, stadium beer girls, and the magnificent, unhinged "paddata-deonjigi"—the legendary Korean bat flip!

SA: Ah, yes. In Major League Baseball, a massive bat flip gets you a 95-mile-per-hour fastball aimed directly at your ribs in the next inning. In Korea, it's an art form. A guy will launch a towering fly ball that gets caught at the warning track, but he’ll still flip his bat into the stratosphere like he just won the World Series.

JT: Exactly! It's pure theater. But let’s be real for a second—with a 100,000 won limit and an 11 PM bedtime, a lot of hardcore gamblers aren't staying on the legal side, right?

SA: Not even close. There is a massive, multi-billion-dollar underground illegal betting market in Korea. People flock to shady private websites just to bypass those strict limits and get their fix of 24/7 live in-play betting.

JT: And the police are constantly playing whack-a-mole trying to shut them down. It’s wild—the state tries so hard to keep things wholesome that they’ve accidentally created a shadow empire of rogue bookies.

SA: Precisely. So if you want to keep your hands clean and your bank account safe, stick to your little paper convenience store slip, enjoy your 5th-inning stress, and make sure you get your bets in before Betman goes to sleep!

Betting part 2 - we make some bets on Monday for Tuesday and Wednesday games and talk about how well they work out.

SA: So now let’s talk about how we did! I went on the betman site and looked at the odds. Presume I put man won down for each bet. For Monday I picked the tie in Asian Games footie between Taiwan women’s vs Vietnam and Korea women’s for the win and the over against Myanmar. Then I took NC to win by 4 over LG on Tuesday because I go by vibes like a moron *joke sting* and Baltimore over New York Yankees with over 3 runs by both teams because I figured arms are tired now. Then on Wednesday I took Seoul to win over 페르반둥 in ACLE because I know nothing about them and I want to sound patriotic on the air. Then finally I took the under for Everton but I wrote these things down before the under was calculated so I’m only guessing here. Great betting reasons, I’m sure *joke sting*.

JT: So I had a fantastic weekend where I was 6 for 6 on games and was up 120,000 won after betting only 15,000 (5,5,50 for each ticket) So on  Wednesday night, I did my usual 5,000 won per each ticket 2 game parlays on each ticket, classic hedge I chose SSG 1 which means they had to win by 2 and that was my lock because Avila was pitching, Then I chose NC 1 as Mike Clevingers first game with NC I figured he would want to ball out, and then I picked KT 1 as they were riding a 7 game winning streak and 2 of Hanhwa all-stars were missing because of the Asian games. So as if KT and SSG won their games I would win 24,000 minus the 15000 I bet,If NC and SSG won I would have gotten 26000 minus the original 15000 and if NC and KT won I would have won 31,500 - 15000, Finally if they all won I would get 81,500 - 15000 won.

SA: And now let’s talk about the results. For me bet 1 failed but bet 2 won 30 thousand minus the fee is 25 thousand. Bet 3 with NC was a bust too, but bet 4 I came up short even though Baltimore won and I wrote down the wrong team name *joke sting*. Yeah I should mention that auto-translate to English kinda works though the team names get a bit fucky. Anyway, on bet 5 Everton I won the under at 1.91. So in total I lost 10 thousand.

JT: You should’ve taken the win for Korea over Argentina.

SA: How about you Mr. hot streak?

JT: Well like you, my hot streak ended in spectacular fashion, as my hopes of Mike Clevinger being the Dinos savior and taking them to the playoffs failed. He was pulled after the 4th inning after throwing only 50 pitchers and giving up 1 room and you know the saying when you get into the KBO bullpen that is never a good thing and LG ended up stomping the Dinos into extinction 9-2 putting them now 4.5 behind Doosan for the final playoff spot. But they do have 6 games in hand on the bears from rainouts, SSG hit for me by winning 4-1 over lowly Lotte. Avila as I thought went 7 strong innings giving up just a run, so I just needed KT to hit to win a whopping 9,000 won overall.
SA:What happened Mr. J?

JT: Well KBO bullpens happened top of the 8th KT scores 1 run to make it 4-2, the bottom of the 8th comes the first bullpen guy Woo Gyu Men gives up a hit and then strikes out a guy and KT coach does what any normal coach does is pull the guy who just struck out a guy,and they bring in son Dong-hyun. He falls behind in the count and throws a meatball down the middle for a game tying 2 run blast. Keeping me awake hoping for some kind of KT rally but the game would end in a 4-4 tie. Hot streak ended because of KBO bullshitpens.

SA: Fantastic stuff Mr. J a true buffalo heartbreak. *joke sting*

JT: Yes this ol’  ticker is battle tested Mr. S.

Scandals

SA: With the great power of sports betting, comes the need for responsibility. And so many people here do not act responsibly.

JT: Present company included.

SA: It’s becoming a bit of a TV trope with shows and movies like the Tazza series starring Byun Yo-han and now rapper Moon Ji-hun in the fourth sequel. The characters are illegal online casino bosses or something like that.

JT: Apparently the director liked how well the rapper handled his English lines and he was better at it than his regular lines. See, kids? This is what you can do when you study hard in hagwon class!

SA: Indeed, Mr. J! All those phonics lessons pay off. Caaat not cat euuu.  *Joke sting*

JT: Our classroom efforts pay off. Anyway, there are lots of real-life betting scandals in Korea, besides the match-fixing ones that we frequently talk about on the baseball episodes. Hit us up with the highlights, Mr. S!
SA: Maybe I should say lowlights because some things would get anyone thinking. Let’s start with former Kiwoon star outfielder Yasiel Puig who recently set a Canadian League home run record but is also dealing with bankruptcy cases and a prison sentence over lying to investigators about bets he made in 2019 according to reports in OSEN online.

JT: (your reaction)

SA: It’s not just athletes that mess up their lives over sports betting. Former KPOP star Seung-ri was found guilty of habitual gambling and embezzlement over the Burning Sun club scandal several years ago. Just last week a former police superintendent got a suspended sentence for violating the foreign exchange act to assist in illegal gambling, and using his influence for steering the investigations into his clients in a favorable direction. Both are in the Chosun biz if you’re interested.

JT: Place your bets on how bad the next scandal will be.

SA:  Let’s rip the band-aid of presumptions off this one. At the time of this writing, Korean police have summoned for interview dozens of Polymarket users. Apparently prediction markets are classified as illegal gambling under the law.

JT: When did they ban the prediction markets? I don’t recall seeing anything in the papers.

SA: It has fallen under the gambling regulations but it wasn’t blocked in Korea until August 19 when the KCSC put in a request based on committee hearings with the NPA and CRC.

JT: They’re pretty strict here. Lately there’s been a push to cut down on youth gambling. Recently there was a voluntary reporting scheme in which kids and teens report themselves in exchange for addiction treatment and debt handling. Recent reports say 1776 kids reported problems and some of the stories are shocking. One kid got into his dad’s phone and transferred 30 mill and lost it all. Another kid sold expensive stuff from the house and lost over 140 thousand dollars. He’s in jail and no Christmas presents until the year 2222 *joke sting*

SA: I’ve read about school gambling networks where kids and their parents became loan sharks, charging 200% interest on some of the loans. Some kids even created their own gambling sites and later branched out to illegal porno. Yup, things got so bad they made Faker the League of Legends player an honorary police officer to get kids to report themselves.

JT: And now there’s talk from Sports TOTO to create a mobile app. As part of the government 2030 policy they want to improve the system by gradually expanding sales hours to late-night and early morning and introduce mobile betting starting next year. It‘ll allow bets using your name through those ID services and link them to real-time betting and allow real-time betting while watching games live or on broadcasts starting in 2028. Then they want to expand to new professional leagues like billiards, table tennis, and handball, and Asian Games e-sports. It will improve payout rates which are low at 64% compared to other gambling industries like 72% for cycle racing, 73% for horse racing, 75% for casinos and 90% for illegal markets. Starting next year, the per-person purchase limit will also be raised from 100,000 Korean won per draw to 200,000 Korean won.

SA: Big money time! *joke sting* So it seems Sports TOTO wants to be competitive and take money out of the hands of the illegal casinos. But that will involve making difficult changes and choices. Think they can pull it off?

JT: Well I’d place that bet on Kalshi but it's blocked here, so we’ll just have to wait & see.

Asian Games Preview

SA: So now it’s the Asian Games which are going on this week through October 3rd. Chuseok viewing time yaaay!

JT: More things to fall asleep to during the food coma *joke sting*.

SA: So I’ve been following the updates from Team Korea. First up is the women’s team being a little under strength because their WNBA player Park Ji-hyun didn’t have time to compete and Park Ji-Su of KB is injured so they’re only going to play with 11 players.

JT: It’s not the easiest to go into a comp when you’re short some players, but as long as their centers don’t get hurt, they should be reasonably fine.

SA: Speaking of basketball there has been an issue with the beds only fitting players who are 195 cm or 6 foot 5 and shorter. Taller players stick off the bed like an 80s comedy movie scene *joke sting*. The Korean team has also reported leaking faucets and showers in their rooms slash refurbed shipping containers. And then the city flooded and the Korean men’s basketball team was cut off from their housing for 4 hours while stuck in the training venue.

JT: They got in all their shots and then some! Unfortunately for the other athletes they also had to deal with leaky roofs. And on Tuesday the Korean men’s footie team bus driver got lost taking the team to the stadium and they were 30 minutes late.
SA: I remember in 2014 when Japanese athletes were making fun of the Incheon Asian games conditions. Oh how the tables have turned!

JT: The country is targeting about 45 gold medals and a top-three finish in the overall medal standings according to reports in the Joongang Daily. Hopefully they won’t get trench foot in the process.

SA: History repeats itself.

GOTW

SA: It’s time for Game of the Week! There’s a LOT of excitement going on this week. But the biggest events are specialties.

JT: What’s on your screen this week?

SA: The 2027 KBO Rookie Draft will be Monday Sep 21st. Broadcast on KBO Live YouTube at 2pm. I think some of the winning players from the U20 tournament team might be there too. This is also special because this might be Kiwoon’s last #1 pick, assuming the league passes their anti-tanking rules.

JT As a Buffalo fan I am all about tanking and believe in it. Their 1st overall probably just going to the MLB after their KBO time is up, so better to not get the fans' hopes up.

SA: What’s on your screen over Chuseok?

JT: Whatever shit the in-laws are watching at the hotel, pray for me we are travelling over the Chuseok Holiday, but my first go to watch will be the Idol Star Athletic Championships which will be taking place over the Chuseok holiday, stars will be taking part in track and field events, futsal, archery, dance sport and breakdancing. I imagine they will crush the dancing competitions, but I will really enjoy the athletic ones as it will bring back memories as a first year in Korea at the kindergarten sports day fails by the not so accustomed to athletic event parents.

SA: Gives me Hunger Games vibes. Are they gonna throw kimchi at the winners *joke sting* Then my second pick is the Chuseok sports they show on broadcast TV. I’m not sure what they’ll be at this time because the schedule hasn’t posted yet. They only go 6 days forward in Korea.

JT: Usually it’s 씨름 but with Asian Games going on, you might get more choices. Of course baseball and footie will be going on. I suggest Monday’s first baseball match up in the Asian games as Korea takes on Chinese Taipei who defeated Korea in a 5-4 thriller in the world baseball Classic almost sending them home.

SA: So, time for redemption.
JT: Correct indeed Mr. S! Korea is the favorite as they send a lot of their KBO all stars like Kim Do Young, Moon Hyun Bin, and No Si Hwan to name a few, where a lot of the other teams rely on amateurs, prospects and minor leagues. I guess they care more about their leagues then the Asian games where Korea finds international tournaments very prestigious and all players will get military exemption if they win the gold at the Asian games.

SA: I do know that Chinese Taipei Wang Yen Chen will be joining the Asian games and he has been pretty good at stymieing Korean hitters.

JT: Ya I imagine he will be starting on Monday but Chinese Taipei hasn't confirmed it yet.

Stars of the Game

JT: (You should pick the U-18 baseball team for beating Japan. Story here)

SA: Badminton World No. 1 Pair Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae

SA: Time for Stars of the Game! Where we talk about a famous player that could use the spotlight. Because it’s the Asian Games, I picked one Korean team that should do well. What about you?

JT: For my Stars of the week, we're shining the spotlight on Korea's Under-18 baseball team!

SA: That's right! They came from behind to beat Japan. And let's be honest, Korea beating Japan in baseball? That's not just a win. That's a national holiday!

JT: Korea started down 2–0, but in the sixth inning, Eom Jun-sang smashed a game-tying double!

SA: And then Lee Ho-min delivered the go-ahead double! Korea went from "Oh no!" to "Let's go!" in one inning!

JT: And pitcher Ha Hyun-seung was unbelievable—three perfect innings and five strikeouts to shut the door!

SA: A comeback, a Korea victory over Japan, and a spot in the final within reach. Korea's young stars are showing up! Congratulations, boys!

JT: Absolutely! Young players, big pressure, and a huge victory.

SA: Japan: better luck next time! Korea: enjoy the celebration! Now to my star to follow, I’m going with the badminton tag team Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae! They won in Paris last year and are eying gold in 2028.

JT: They’ve been playing together since 2018 when they went on a tear through the badminton championships but didn’t win gold in 24. They’re looking to change that, even though they’ve played against each other recently.

SA: In the Paris Olympics quarterfinals, Kim’s team beat Seo’s but he played so hard it made him puke into a bag after the match. That’s dedication for ya! And maybe stomach problems.

JT: Better bring extra barf bags.

SA: According to reports in the Chosun Daily, Seo and Kim recently signed four-year individual sponsorship contracts with Yonex. Seo’s annual contract is reportedly worth 2.2 billion Korean won, and Kim’s 1.5 billion won. And they’ve been giving back to the federation for its youth development program. Maybe they’ve set the foundation for the next great doubles team?

JT: It’ll be inspiring if they medal in Los Angeles.

Worst Persons

SA: And now it’s time for the lowlights, the low effort, the unlucky.

JT: The Worst Persons in the Korean Sports World! Get your shot glasses filled.

SA: The Nap award goes to… the Women’s Pro Baseball League in the United States. Which is weird that I would bring up a US sports league here, but it involves a Korean player. During NY Heights’ playoff game against the LA Queens, the Youtube feed cut out multiple times, especially whenever something interesting was happening on the field.

JT: Like when Kim Rakyung would pitch the ball, or when players did things in the field.

SA: I was watching the game, at least I was trying to, when the feed went out and when it came back, LA Queens 2nd baseman Benitez was down in the grass. There are a lot of Korean fans who tune in to the games so it was a source of irritation and humor all day in the chat.

JT: They even had the bar codes on the screen. The fans were saying the staff should turn off the cameras and do it old school radio style!

SA: And throw in an extra Nap award for not having Joa Park and Rakyung Kim jerseys on sale. They would’ve broke the bank by now!

JT: Terrible marketing all around.

SA: The Radon award goes to… FC Seoul fans for getting the team in trouble over that insulting banner they hung up during their match against Incheon.

JT: The KPFL held its 6th disciplinary committee meeting on the 10th and decided penalties for Anyang coach Yoo Byung-hoon, Busan's Christian, and the Seoul club. FC Seoul got docked 8 million won because of the fans banner during a match between Seoul and Incheon held at Seoul World Cup Stadium on the 5th. A banner that explicitly denigrated the opposing club and Incheon was displayed in Seoul's home supporters' section.

SA: Ut oh! Did the paper say the exact phrase?

JT: No but on the banner, there’s hangeul, what I think is Mandarin, either Cantonese or hiragana Japanese, and a little English abbreviation at the end. So basically gibberish in 3 different writing systems.

SA: If I ran it through Google translate on my phone what would happen?

JT: It’s probably overheat and explode *joke sting*. Fortunately the Incheon fans did not overheat and attack the Seoul fans. They have been known to charge onto the field in the past.

SA: So the KPFL rules state that when fans' expressions go beyond simple criticism or opinion and may damage or insult another's honor, it risks leading to collective action or clashes, and that posting malicious materials denigrating opposing clubs harms the culture of mutual respect that the K League seeks to promote.

JT: They don’t want to go back to the old days of fans throwing hands in the stands and shooting smoke bombs at each other. It was a family friendly environment in those days.

SA: And that means Seoul is on the hot seat because they were the host of the match. If I were FC Seoul, I’d dock the ultra fans 1 game since they cost me nearly half a game’s revenue.

JT: And we’re not done with the K-League! The plutonium award goes to…Busan iPark’s Christian Renato Gonalves Riquelme for getting suspended for 60 days due to a drunk driving arrest.

SA: According to reports in OSEN online, Christian was arrested on the 7th, the team informed the league, which suspended him from team activities and training, and then on the 10th they ruled that he would get a 15-match suspension and a 4 million won fine. 15 games is effectively the rest of the season and the playoffs.

JT: Why’d they go from 60 games to 15 matches?

SA: There’s a rule saying that after something bad happens, players get automatically suspended by the league until the disciplinary committee decides what to do. But yeah, it’s a big problem for the team.

JT: He can’t be their entire offense.

SA: Ummm…

JT: Oh no…

SA: He’s tied for 6th in the league with 8 goals this season. But they have another high scorer they can rely on. Unfortunately, the team’s in 6th place and they’ve got Gimpo not that far behind and Hwaseong’s only 2 points ahead. They’ve got a cushion to make the playoffs but a losing streak could end their promotion hopes.

JT: Hell, the other teams have 2 top 10 scorers each. Who is Busan gonna put on Luis? On 박재용? It’s like going into battle missing one of your magazines.

SA: And that’s why Christian is today’s WORST PERSON in the Korean sports world! Now it’s time to drink, Busan iPark fans.

Copy Ending from previous multi-host episode

SA: A shoutout to our listeners in New Caledonia, France! Home of AS Magenta, the 3rd best football team in the territory!

JT: Which we chose to talk about because it was the easiest team word to say from the list *joke sting*!

SA: If you go there, check out the team. When you’re not surfing or snorkeling, though you’ll probably forget about the team by then. I suggest getting a shirt because their logo is cute. (Laughter) Well it is!

JT: We’ll be back in 2 weeks with our playoff preview and Asian Games Talk!

SA: Bet we’ll be there, Korean Sports fans!
